We met Peter Norman in Williamstown on July 13th 2006 to interview him. We talked so much we ran out of tapes. His running career, training in Melbourne, the Mexico Olympics, his Brunswick footy club, the first heat when he broke the Olympic record, the semi final when John Carlos finished ahead of him, the 200m final, his precise memories of the planning of the action immediately prior to the 200m medal ceremony, the actual medal ceremony, the response from the crowd and the ramifications of his actions…. We talked about how he saw the world at that time, how he saw the world from his perspective, living in Melbourne.
Peter remembered the discussion with Tommie and John immediately after the race in the changing area under the stadium. They were waiting for the medal ceremony to begin. He recalled his involvement in the planning of the action and his decision to become a part of the protest by wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge on his Australian team tracksuit. Then we talked about how the decision to stand alongside Tommie Smith and John Carlos in protest subsequently affected his life
